While the ATP World Tour is getting ready to kick-off the 2011 season Sunday in Brisbane, the biggest names in men's tennis can be found already involved in a high-profile exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
The Mubadala Tennis Championships boasts a field that includes Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Robin Soderling, Tomas Berdych, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marcos Baghdatis. The tournament only runs from Thursday December 30th until Saturday January 1st and follows a single elimination format. Nadal and Federer earned the right to a "first-round" bye due to their being seeded one and two respectively.
On Thursday, Soderling defeated Tsonga by a score of 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 while Berdych defeated Baghdatis 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Federer will now face Soderling on Friday in the first match at 3pm local time while Nadal will play Berdych no sooner than 5pm.
The final will be on Saturday at 5pm, preceeded by the two losing semi-finalists playing each other for third place at 3pm.
