« Any Challengers for Federer? | Main | Roche Says Federer Will Get Better »

January 29, 2007

The obvious reason why he has had precious little opportunity to use his improved stamina is the very fact that he has improved his stamina! Due to his superb fitness, he doesn't have letdowns anymore early in matches. He comes out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and rarely gives his opponents to gain the upperhand.

The only times I've seen Roger look fatigued were against Murray in Cincinnati last year (he had just won in Canada so you can't blame him) and in the Masters Cup 05 when he blew the two-set lead against Nalbandian.

It's a good point though that he never gets to test his stamina because he demolishes his opponents so quickly. He did look good in those long, grinding matches against Rafa on clay last year and at the U.S. Open last year, he had a couple of tough four-setters with Roddick and Blake but stepped up in the fourth set and put them away.

I think Roger showed in 06 that the endurance work he did in 05 paid off. I think it's what powered him to such a strong clay-court season It just adds to his complete package.
