Obviously, Nalbandian has not had his way with Federer lately. I mean he won the masters cup last year when Federer wasn't at his best, and Federer should've won that match anyway. Let's not forget that Fed beat him in straight sets in the round robin match-up. It seems like either Blake or Robredo is going to miss out this year. I hope it's Robredo as I like to See blake at Shanghi. Can Gonzo win tomorrow? Maybe. It depends on Feds form than anything else. I tell you what! Nadal is so happy that Berdych lost today as had he won today he would've been a serious contender for Shanghai. Imangine Nadal, Roddick, Berdych, Blake grouped together!! Can Nadal go 0-3?

Kelly

Berdych may still be a contendor, it dependshow well he does in Basel and Paris.

I watched Roger play Fernando live in Toronto earlier this year. It's hard to explain, but there's such a huge difference in their mental stature and presence on the court, I don't think Gonzalez is going to get on the board in their head-to-head record any time soon (0-7 at the moment). He needs to take his entire game to the next level, then he might have a chance. This is just my opinion formed from what I saw of their match. Roger, although he lost a set on that day, always seemed to be in total control. Bored, even.

John

Gonzalez might beat Nadal, but he can't beat Federer. I hope not :) But, seriously, Berdych lost today because of the crowd. Wouldn't have made a difference as Federer can beat a double team of Berdych and Gonzalez.

Hi,
I have uploaded the final game of Rog v Gonzalez if you'd like to see it:

Thanks, Mark!

Is it just me or do others also feel that Roger's backhand is fast becoming the best around (if it isn't already)? He is certainly using it to almost equal effect as his forehand, recently. In fact, against David and Fernando, it was the most effective shot.

Mark

Yes Peacemaster, I've noticed lately that Roger's backhand has not only gotten more consistent but more powerful and less of a weakness than it ever has been. I think he's bulked up a little (compared to a couple of years back) and so maybe this is the result of it? I'm sure it is part of a strategy for next year, especially on the clay against Rafa - what do you think?

Peacemaster

I agree, Mark. He can go toe-to-toe with the Guns of Mallorca on those long dirt rallies to better effect with increased power on his backhand. I think his endurance is better as well (it was always very good any way). That's what fascinates me most about Roger. It seems everything he does is done with intelligent deliberation, at exactly the right time and to exactly the right extent. No wonder about his success then, eh?

Kelly

What amazes me about Fed is that he can play "good" throughout the match, but when a key point/game comes, his game raises so much more above where he usually plays.

Hey Mark! I know you... I have thanked you for your comments several times on your youtube site as well as rf.com! Didn't know you post here as well... It's good to talk about Roger everywhere isn't it?

By the way... I post at rf.com under another name (you know me - a hint - thanks for sending me someting)...

Roger's backhand is better probably because he's used it so much. Guys stayed away from his forehand and his backhand was considered his weaker side. Well not anymore. He's getting so good it's ridiculous.

He's almost unbeatable right now on any other surface other than clay and he's pretty darn good on the dirt. The only thing standing between him and the Grand Slam next year is the French. If he wins Roland Garros, he's the best ever.

Peacemaster

Well said, Stellcat. I felt that, this season, Roger didn't really set out to win the Grand Slam. He certainly could have done it and I'm sure he knew that he could, but he didn't plan on it (as he stressed many times leading up to the FO). Wisely so, as it appears.

I think he will set out to win the Grand Slam next year.

If that's the case, look out.

Mark

Fan Of Tennis, I actually started posting here before I even hit the forums of RF.com. I enjoy coming back here to have a look at the debates, but of course you know I'm busy at RF.com now ;) . And yes it's great to talk about Rog anywhere. I am not entirely certain who you are, though I may have an idea - does your nickname start with a D??

Mark.

Gonzo went a little gonzo with the champagne after the match spraying it right in Federer's face.
