"The Sharapovas are still blaming me for that." - Pilot Pen tournament director Anne Worcester joking about last year granting a wildcard to Mashona Washington who then proceeded to defeat Maria Sharapova in the tournament.
Which begs the question - What is the proper way to refer to a Russian family in English? The Sharapovas? The Sharapovs?
Sharapovs. That is the masculine form of the name and the one that would take the plural in Russian (masculine plural can refer to a mixed group of men and women as well as a group of men; it's the same for any language with gender).
I hate seeing her loathsome father refered to as Yuri Sharapova, but prolly not half as much as he does!
